Coach Bob Freschi learned something about Kylee Scroggs right before the season-opening dual match for the Napa Valley College women’s golf team last fall.

It was on Sept. 3, with Scroggs arriving at Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards, the Storm’s home course in American Canyon, ready to tough it out.

Scroggs, a freshman, had a sore throat. As an extra precaution, she went to the Student Health Center at Napa Valley College to get checked out.

“She still wanted to play. I'm like, ‘This is a dual match. You don't have to play,’ ” Freschi said last week from his office in the Athletic Department.

The response that he got from Scroggs that day went like this:

“No, I’m going to play.”

Monday’s final round of the 2025 California Community College Athletic Association State Women’s Golf Championships at the River Course at Alisal, in Solvang (Santa Barbara County) was canceled due to rain and unplayable conditions.

Originally scheduled as a two-day, 36-hole event, it was “shortened to just the opening 18 holes due to relentless rain that made the golf course unplayable,” the California Community College Athletic Association said in a report, at www.cccaasports.org, on Nov. 17.

AMERICAN CANYON – Taking into account a big change in the weather, Bob Freschi knew right away that scoring conditions for Napa Valley College’s final home match of the season on Wednesday were going to be all the more difficult.

It was windy and chilly with partly cloudy skies when players arrived at Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards prior to the Big 8 Conference’s eighth match of the season for women's golf.

“Once we got to the course, we knew the scores will be a little bit higher,” said Freschi, the Storm’s head coach. “It’s what we talked about – keep our ball in play and make sure we stayed out of the penalty areas. We hung in there and did what we had to do to come in second, with a pretty respectable score.”

NVC’s Libby Webb ‘has a passion for the game of golf’

AMERICAN CANYON – Libby Webb spent several months preparing and getting ready for her sophomore season on the Napa Valley College women’s golf team.

It all began for Webb during the team’s spring program when she worked with David Knox, the Storm’s assistant coach and a PGA Class A golf professional who is the Director of Instruction at Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park.

“He was super helpful. We worked a lot more on mechanics,” said Webb. “He helped me with swing mechanics, putting and chipping. All of that really helped. He focused on a lot of wedge shots, like 40 to 80 yards, which is really important. You can be in that situation all the time. So, getting better at those shots, for sure, has an impact on my game.”

AMERICAN CANYON – Kylee Scroggs was not feeling very well when she arrived at Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards on Wednesday for the Napa Valley College women’s golf team’s season-opening match.

“I knew that I was under the weather,” said Scroggs, a freshman, who had a sore throat.

But she decided to play in the dual match against Sacramento City College about an hour before her starting time.

“It was just to go out and have fun and be there for my team. I decided, ‘Let's do it.’ I'm glad I was able to come out here,” said Scroggs.

Scroggs went out in her first college match and posted an 84, a score that counted, as Napa Valley won its dual match, 358-371, over Sacramento City College, on a day with sunny, breezy conditions, and temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s.

Jill Obelleiro concluded one of the greatest careers by a player in Napa Valley College women’s golf history, tying for ninth place individually on Monday at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships in Nipomo (San Luis Obispo County).

After starting out the two-day, 36-hole season-ending tournament on Sunday with a 7-over-par 78, Obelleiro, a sophomore, played her final round for the Storm, carding a 10-over-par 81, good for a top-10 finish at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

Obelleiro’s two-day total of 159 led Napa Valley, a member of the Big 8 Conference, to a ninth-place team finish. She was tied for 11th place in the first round.

“I definitely had a fun time on the team for the last two years,” said Obelleiro. “(Bob Freschi) is just a great coach; just always is making sure that we're having fun. So, I really enjoyed that. And the girls, they're incredible.”

Obelleiro completed her round, getting up and down from off the green and making a par-saving putt from 12 feet on No. 18. It was her final hole of the day.

“She was ecstatic,” Storm head coach Bob Freschi said. “It was really impressive.
