The shots weren’t falling for Napa Valley College in the first quarter of the Storm Surge on Thursday.

The Storm had some good looks, both from the inside and outside, but they came away with just nine points to show for it.

“I think it was more of like we weren't really playing well, and our offense wasn't really flowing well,” said Arianna Aguilar, a returning sophomore. “I knew I had to step it up for the team to get the win.”

Aguilar took over for Napa Valley, the host of the fifth annual Storm Surge, a preseason women’s basketball invitational tournament, which continues on Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13.

Aguilar, a guard who was named All-Bay Valley Conference last year, took charge, scoring 17 points in the second quarter and leading the Storm to a 30-19 lead at halftime. She had two 3-pointers and made all three of her free throws in that stretch, igniting the Storm’s attack as they went on to beat Porterville College, 61-36, in a first-round game.

NVC women’s basketball struggles with rebounding, transition defense in home opener

After starting out the 2025-26 season with three straight road games, the Napa Valley College women’s basketball team opened its home schedule on Thursday with a nonconference game against College of the Redwoods-Eureka.

Nine players scored for the Storm, but they had only one 3-pointer and struggled with their rebounding and also their transition defense in a 61-47 loss.

“Just didn't play well,” said Storm coach Paul DeBolt. “We were a little unfocused, I felt like tonight. It's not the end of the world. We will get better. It's a good group of kids.”

It was the fourth game in six days for Napa Valley (2-2 overall), which started out the season at the Pasadena City College Sisterhood of Champions Tournament, Nov. 1 and 2. The Storm was also on the road, beating host American River College-Sacramento, 66-45, on Nov. 4.

Arianna Aguilar calls it her journey.

It’s a journey that she has been on since having surgery on March 20 on her right foot.

It’s a journey that is geared toward taking her back to the basketball court and her place on the Napa Valley College women’s team.

It’s a journey all about commitment, courage, dedication, passion and love for the game, and an absolute determination to come back for her sophomore season as one of the Storm’s captains and team leaders.

“Getting through all these injuries, it's just part of my journey,” Aguilar said in July.

This is not the first time that Aguilar has worked to return from injury.
